She ventured into commercial design and art in 1971 and developed a range of goods made from paper for Hallmark. Some scarves from Vanderbilt's work were taken to finally license her name and launch a range of products. These included perfume, eyewear and clothing. The swan logo along with the scripted signature was seen on a line of well-fitted designer jeans during the 1970s. These turned her into a mainstream fashion designer.
