Here's everything you need to know about the best place to use perfume and how to get the most out of your favorite scent.
Essentially, pulse points are nexuses of blood flow that emanate heat. Because of this, they're the warmest areas on the body and, naturally, the best place to spray perfume. Perfume consists primarily of oils and extracts that cling to the area they're applied to. They're amplified by heat, so the more warmth they're exposed to, the stronger they'll smell and the longer they'll last.
Depending on your preference, you can choose from several pulse points. Whether you put perfume behind your ears, on your neck, armpits, chest, belly button, or the back of your knees, your perfume will stick with you all day long. However, putting it on your clothes will keep it separated from body heat, so while you can smell it, it'll weaken and fade much quicker.
The same thing could happen when applying perfume to your hair, though to a slightly lesser degree, so you should instead use a specialized hair perfume. You're best off sticking to pulse points when applying your perfume.
Aside from finding the best areas to apply perfume, you should also be conscious of the conditions under which you use it. Perfume is best applied to dry skin immediately after a shower. Wet skin will naturally wash off the perfume, so be sure your skin is dry before using. However, the heat from the shower will open up your pores. When perfume is sprayed on these open pores, it'll essentially be locked in once your pores close as they cool off.
In addition, the composition of the perfume you're applying can affect how long it lasts. Generally, perfumes with heavier base notes, such as musk or wood, last much longer, while perfumes emphasizing top notes, such as water or citrus, will fade quickly. Of course, you shouldn't let the composition of your favorite perfume shouldn't stop you from wearing and enjoying it, but you should be aware and bring a refresher along if you need it.
So, why do people put perfume behind their ears? Combining factors such as body heat and location makes the space behind your ears an excellent place to bring out all the intricacies of your favorite scents. Applying it there lets you get the most out of your perfume and enjoy it to the fullest.
